Kenai Fishing

After Homer, we made a run to Soldotna to fish on the Kenai River. The best Salmon fishing in Alaska - according to some. They do take a great many fish out of here - I'm told. Yes that means that I didn't get a King Salamon. We were fishing the last two days of the season run and thems that got through were gone.
The river was beautiful, but getting up for a 5:30 start was soooo like working again.
This is our guide Jay - fabulous guy - waiting to go out.
You can't start fishing until 6AM - if you are with a guide. You boat to a spot Jay knows to have fish, point the boat upstream and set the engine to push us just a bit faster than the current, which is 15 MPH or so. This way you float down stream at a controlled speed and try to get the fish to attack the hook. It is a little too passive for me, but then again I didn't hook a king either. I saw some get hooked up and they hauled the boat up stream - that would be a rush.
Two mornings of watching the banks of the river and reeling in when we decided to start over.
Went to the town of Kenai at the mouth of the river a saw from the overlook the dip netters going for fish. They just line the shore, put these large nets into the water and nab a fish as it swims by. Only locals are allow to fish in this manor, however.
That could be me looking out to sea. Those are some of the dip netters across the way.
Russian Church in Kenai - They like their Fords
But you see it wasn't all for not - I did catch to Reds - Sockeyes.
Don't ask how much they cost per pound!!
